This year, we read a few different texts. Of Mice and Men, Farewell to Manzanar, and To Kill a Mockingbird all taught me many valuable life lessons. In To Kill a Mockingbird, it taught me that people are people, and you should never judge somebody based on social class or race. Before you start to judge somebody, you need to put yourself in their shoes and look at the situation based on their perspective. The life lesson taught in Farewell to Manzanar is to always have a positive attitude towards everything in life, and if you have hope, you can overcome many difficult situations. In Of Mice and Men, it taught me that sometimes, dreams are not meant to be attained, but they are still meant to be strived for. Your friendship will always be with you, and sometimes, sacrifices have to be made for people that you care about. To Kill a Mockingbird taught many lessons, but the most important lesson that Harper Lee implied was regardless of people’s race or social class, people are all the same. You should always look at things from the other person’s perspective before you discriminate them. Discrimination was a key factor to all aspects of the story. â€Å"I wants to know why you bringin’ white chillun to nugget church† (Lee 158). Lula said this to Calpurnia when she brought Jem and Scout to her church. Raymond is diagnosed with Savants Syndrome. In Raymond’s case, he functions at an impressively high level (Inc., 2004). Savant syndrome is diagnosed when an individual performs basic cognitive processes below what is deemed as normal. However these individuals exhibit exceptional abilities in certain areas. While sixteen percent doesn’t seem like a large number; it represents up to 40 million citizens in the United States. Statistics show that the poverty universe consumes up to 308,196,783 citizens that can be affected by poverty. According to the census Bureau, The poverty universe refers to the people who the Bureau can determine poverty status. However, the United States census Bureau has come up with a ninety percent confidence interval that shows that 48,810,868 to 49,067,044 citizens are affected by poverty. North Carolina has a poverty universe of 9,396,989 and a ninety percent confidence interval of 1,687,683 to 1,73 4,979. In the graph below you will notice that in North Carolina the rate of poverty amongst the minorities in this state is very high. The look on the boys face when Robinson came out and everyone including his dad started yelling at him and saying those things, the boy looked a little scared or unsure and concerned about what to do and such.
